Student of the Year - Music Review

Music by: Vishal-Shekhar

Ratta Maar begins with light strumming of the guitar and Vishal Dadlani's humming followed by Shefali Alvarez's smooth entrance. The song build into a chant of Ratta Maar and then interchanging guitar strumming. The song amptly fits the film's school setting based on the lyrics and seems to give an impression that it will be played in the opening credits.

Radha starts with the wonderful Shreya Ghoshal's voice which reminds you of her masterpiece style from DEVDAS. The song adds some techno and tabla with English lyrics. The song is obviously describing the female lead, Alia Bhatt's role of Shanaya. This song is signature Karan Johar with the orchestration matching the desi drums. Udit Narayan's small part in the end takes you back to the 90s for the sure while the English lyrics is catchy.

Ishq Wala Love starts surprisingly with a light guitar almost like a reprise. The violins in the song adds some drama and the heavy but slow tabla adds some suspense. It's really a light romantic song which is a surprise from Karan Johar nonetheless the song is excellent. Soft on ears but not necessarily a song I would expect to be sung like Suraj Hua Madham or Mitwa but you will definitely play it for him/her. Neeti Mohan's soft voice fits the song perfectly. The claps with the repitition of Ishq Wala Love by Shekhar Ravjiani and Salim Merchant along with the chimes gives the image of a moonlit sky with your love.

We've already heard the very fun and catchy Disco Song. The composition of the lyrics roll very easily on the lips and I can see this being sung by many. The light disco beats behind the Disco Deewane chorus is very fun to listen to by itself. The solos between the choruses are even better and does not leave you bored while listening. Definitely have to give high praises to Vishal-Shekhar for utilizing so many elements including the Disco Deewane sample to create this superb song.

Kukkad starts with a rooster? Lol anyways the Punjabi tunes and bass kicks in as well as Shahid Mallya energetic voice. This song is a step away from we've already heard in the album as Shahid's voice is more baritone and the song uses more electronic techno/club beats. The English lyrics midway through the song once again is signature Karan Johar but the song itself isn't as I think this is a weak song of the album.

Vele has the heavy bass heard in the theatrical trailer. The chorus of the song is extremely catchy as well as the flute of some sort, I don't know what it is. Shekhar Ravjiani's lines are delivered crisply. The hip-hop portion has another set of English lyrics which could be very catchy with listeners.

Mashup of the Year is basically a remix of all six songs and wraps up the album very nicely. Expect to hear it in the clubs despite it having the same template as many club songs.

Overall, the album is signature Karan Johar with very youthful and modern music. This is one you won't miss even if you try for the next few months.

Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal - Music Review

Music by: Sajid-Wajid

Starting with Dariya Ho, I'm extremely impressed and pleased that it is a romantic has desi melody with a strong vocal backing. The song really does give the charm of the 90s especially with the splendid usage of the flutes and the rhyming of the lyrics. One thing I don't understand is why people dislike the song because the guitar background has a faint resemblance to Chaiya Chaiya from DIL SE? Nonetheless, this is a must listen for anyone liking the classic 90s melody.

Seeing Mamta Sharma as singer for the song I'm not expecting much other than an itemish number which is exactly what is delivered. What is different with this item song is the intervals between the chorus and the next segment of the lyrics which are nicely composed. The hook line is catchy but not overburdening so I would recommend even if you don't usually like item songs.

Zor Naache starts somewhat like parts of HUM DIL NE CHUPKE SANAM which is strange since Keerthi Sagathia is the only comparison between both albums. The song is okay nothing really to boast. Probably good background music.

In Ishq Ki Dafli Baje, it's good to hear Babul Supriyo after a while. This is another full out desi tune but just like Zor Naache this one doesn't stand out. The bhangra and the ring rang chants are good but the composing of the instruments and lyrics are even better. It's worth a listen but is not the highlight of the album.

Ringa Ringa sounds fairly similar Ishq Ki Dafli Baje since they have the same fast pace dholak/bhangra beat going. I wouldn't really be fussy listening to this one just because it sounds similar to songs we've heard before. Ujjaini is very energetic in this song which reminds me of Are Pritam Pyaare.

The theme song is basically Ringa Ringa, I would not go for it.

Overall, this album is Indian at its core but Dariya Ho is a must listen while Desi Mem is an item song worth considering. The rest will have a hard time standing out with the crowd of new music releasing in these few weeks.

Dariya Ho - Shadaab Faridi, Monali Thakur 9/10
Desi Mem - Mamta Sharma, Sarosh Sami 7/10
Zor Naache - Keerthi Sagathia, Sugandha Mishra 6/10
Ishq Ki Dafli Baje - Babul Supriyo, Sugandha Mishra, Bela Shende 6/10
Ringa Ringa - Ujjaini, Sarosh Sami 5/10
Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal (Theme) - Uvie, Wajid 5/10

Overall: 6.3/10

OMG Oh My God - Music Review

Music by: Himesh Reshammiya, Anjjan-Meet Bros, Sachin-Jigar

Go Go Govinda has a nice strong melody from Himesh Reshammiya. The track definitely is festive and upbeat and has the lyrics to make it have good repeat value. The beating of the sticks and the drums puts you in a good mood when listening to the song.

Don't Worry has the strumming of the guitar which reminds you of Dum Maaro Dum the song. The beat reminds me of the Step Up and Bring It On movies for a strange reason. The pace is fast and doesn't get boring as the hook is very catchy.

Mere Nishaan composed by Anjjan-Meet Bros is a slower paced song with the tabla and violins being used beautifully. Kailash Kher fits this song very well and it is refreshing to hear him again with a great composition. Glad to see that Anjjan-Meet Bros are not one HIT wonders after Shirt Do Button from KYA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM.

Tu Hi Tu confused me a little in the beginning as the flute and violins gave the impression of a dramatic song with tablas. However, the song breaks into hip-hop beats with a little bit of the electronic guitar. The song gets a bit a repetitive as Himesh Reshammiya makes limited changes to the initial template.

Hari Bol starts strong with Kirti Sigathia holding the notes very well with a standard desi tune in the background. The song changes pace midway and it is actually the highlight of the song as I found the musicality of it a little too confusing to follow as instruments were changing constantly. Not my type of song but please do check it out, you may like it better since it is a good song.

Now for the remixes, I have a soft spot for Himesh Reshammiya remixes however only Don't Worry deserves a spot on your Ipod.

Overall, 3 very strong songs that deserves a listen.

Don't Worry - Benny Dayal, Himesh Reshammiya, Arya Acharya 8/10
Mere Nishaan - Kailash Kher, Anjjan-Meet Bros 7/10
Tu Hi Tu - Mohd Irfan 3/10
Go Go Govinda - Mika Singh, Shreya Ghoshal 8/10
Hari Bol - Kirti Sigathia 5/10

Overall: 6.2/10

Heroine - Music Review

Music by: Salim-Sulaiman

The album starts with one of the best item songs I've heard this year Halkat Jawani. The song starts with a bang through the strumming of the guitar and the tunes from the harmonium. The feel of the song is very desi and acclaim has to be given to Sunidhi who infuses a great deal of energy. Definitely one of the best songs this year.

There isn't much that comes to mind listening to Saiyaan. It tries hard to fall out of the standard RFAK song by the cello solo but it still sounds like a song I've heard before. It's a soft song with a slow melody which is supported by the dholak and the chiming of bells in the background. It doesn't make much impression on me.

Main Heroine Hoon sounds like a typical Salim-Sulaiman song mixed with Honeymoon Ki Raat from THE DIRTY PICTURE. The melody and pace is different but Aditi Singh Sharma's deliverance of the lyrics bears resemblance to Sunidhi Chauhan. Somehow the song sounds like a part of a dramatic Hollywood musical.

Before Shreya Ghoshal starts singing, the piano piece sounds a bit like Mar Jawan from FASHION. Then as Shreya starts to sing even that begins to sound like FASHION. The similarities end when the song breaks into a ballad. The chorus line is impactful as the supporting singers in the background give support to the crescendo of the song. The guitar solo doesn't really stand out.

Tujhpe Fida starts to sound like a remixed club tune. The pairing of the singers in the song doesn't really fit the song as they seem to clash. The techno and the auto tuning of the song seems very average and falls flat of giving an impression. On a side note, Subha Hone Na De from DESI BOYZ is the only song which I think was successful recently in giving the club sound in Indian music.

Overall, if you are a Salim-Sulaiman fan you will want the whole album as it fits their template well if not Halkat Jawani and Saaiyaan are recommended. The others you can wait for the promos or watch the film to see if you like them.

Halkat Jawani – Sunidhi Chauhan 9/10
Saaiyaan – Rahat Fateh Ali Khan 7/10
Main Heroine Hoon – Aditi Singh Sharma 5/10
Khwahishein – Shreya Ghoshal 5/10
Tujhpe Fida – Benny Dayal, Shradha Pandit 4/10

Overall: 6.0/10

Barfi - Music Review

Music by: Pritam

The album starts with the splendid whisling and accordian tunes in Ala Barfi. Mohit Chauhan is just refreshing which is surprising since he seems to reinvent himself with each song. Most notably is the composition by Pritam which is light on arrangement but enjoyable since the loops transition very well into each other. As for Swanand Kirke's version of the song, the composition is relatively the same but not as enjoyable as Swanand's voice is a bit baritone. It simply doesn't live up to the magic created by Mohit. I think if Mohit didn't have a version of the song, Swanand's version would've been applauded but Mohit's version is far better in comparison.

Main Kya Karoon starts rather rapidly with Nikhil wasting no time in delivering the lyrics. Another song which is light on arrangement but this time it is the solo instrumentals which stand out. Yes Nikhil is great but he seems too reserved. The repetition in the chorus is catchy and the various instruments in the background is fun to listen and decipher.

Kyon takes a little longer to draw you in as it sounds fitting with the past two songs. The crescendo with the violins change that really quickly and then Sunidhi Chauhan's voice solidify that. The chiming to concludes the song really completes what seems to be a fairy tale of a song.

Shreya Ghoshal introduction in Aashiyan is WOW, incredible. She sounds ethereal in her chorus portion. The pairing with Nikhil is very impressive and even more is Pritam's composition. The flutes, the cellos, the tympani all are incredible.

Saawali Si Raat starts off dream like with high pitched instrumentals. The song is very slow and soft in the instruments. This may be a song better appreciated on screen even though the musicality is great somewhat like a Vishal Bhardwaj composition for KAMINEY.

Phir Le Aya Dil features Rekha Bhardwaj which is a major surprise for a Pritam album. The song is like a ghazal with the tablas. The western instruments in the background fits seemingly perfect as they transition from each other very well. Rekha sounds at her best as usual so there is nothing to critique there but the song wonderful. The only concern is that it may get lost in the crowd of current songs. Arjit's version of the song sounds outstanding somewhat like Sonu Nigam and Hariharan. This version is much more refined as a ghazal and doesn't venture so much into the western orchestration as Rekha's. And as I write that there is a piano solo haha. Anyways, I still prefer Rekha's version as I found hers to be a perfect mix of Western and Indian orchestration. If you like very classical Indian then Arjit's version may be for you.

Overall, BARFI has a European feel with a great old time charm by Pritam.

Ala Barfi! - Mohit Chauhan 8/10
Main Kya Karoon - Nikhil Paul George 8/10
Kyon - Papon, Sunidhi Chauhan 7/10
Aashiyan - Nikhil Paul George, Shreya Ghoshal 8/10
Saawali Si Raat - Arijit Singh 5/10
Phir Le Aya Dil - Rekha Bhardwaj 6/10

Overall: 7/10
